Natalia Peart, who was a psychologist on the team at Johns Hopkins University and wrote “Future Proofed: How To Navigate Disruptive Change, Find Calm in Chaos, and Succeed in Work & Life,” says that we need to stop being passive about professional progress.

“There’s no longer that idea of waiting for someone else to decide how your career should progress. Or leaving it to face the job market again only when you’re unhappy in your current job or forced to look for a new company,” she explains.

In a scenario of changes within organizations, and professionals sometimes uncertain about the future of their careers, it is essential to stay focused on your goals. To explore this topic further, we brought Sergio Povoa, CHRO - Human Resources at OLX Brasil for a conversation with our CEO, Roberto Costa.

In addition to his experiences, he shares tips on how you can manage your career and guide it toward success.

“I like to tell my story, about how I started as a cleaning assistant, because that’s where I got the greatest lesson of my life. Will there be unpleasant tasks in your job? Do them quickly, so you have time left to do the things you enjoy. Don’t procrastinate. I would get there, clean the bathroom, clean the floor, and still have time left to learn more interesting things. I became an office boy, would go get coffee, deliver envelopes, and still had time left to learn more interesting things. So my whole life, I used these pockets of time I created in my day to learn new things,” says Sérgio. “The humility to recognize that you have a weakness helps you leverage yourself when you need it,” he adds.
